NICTD (Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District), South Shore Line railroad is hiring a Terminal Manager to help lead, manage, and supervise real time railroad operations within the Transportation Department. This is a unique career opportunity for overseeing NICTD’s transportation operations and providing pro-active participation on daily train operations. The successful applicant will be part of a close-knit team of dedicated transportation professionals who share a common interest in delivering safe and excellent passenger train service within Northwest Indiana and the Chicago metro area.
Position Summary: The Terminal Manager will report directly to the Terminal Superintendent. Working closely with the Chief Transportation Officer, Assistant Chief Transportation Officer, Road Foreman of Engines, and Chief Dispatcher and trainmasters providing daily proactive communication on real-time train performance and lead contact on incidents and accidents. Close coordination with Metra supervisory personnel, and NICTD Police is also required.
Description of Duties:
- First level leadership and supervision of all operating crew members.
- Maintain conductor or engineer qualifications to train and operate when needed.
- Perform training of engineers and conductors.
- Perform regular operational tests as required.
- Participate in the maintenance of the District’s Employee Efficiency Testing program.
- Periodically ride trains to assess employee compliance with rules and special instructions.
- Participate in the development and implementation of rules instruction and changes, training, accident investigation, and discipline process.
- Serve as a hearing officer or witness in company hearings and investigations.
- Other duties as assigned by the Terminal Superintendent.
- Managing incidents: Leading recovery and investigation efforts during accidents or incidents
- Developing strategies: Developing operational strategies for construction and maintenance activities
- Collaborating with Metra Supervisors to provide a safe and efficient experience for operating personnel and passengers
- Analyzing delay patterns and providing feedback and solutions for improvement
- Developing operational strategies for construction, maintenance activities, and special events.
- Working closely with NICTD passengers to resolve any issues or complaints.
- 21 Years of age or older.
- High school diploma or GED. Associate or bachelor's degree preferred but not required.
- Self-motivated and interested in motivating others to focus on proper and safe work habits.
- Must display a personal history of working in a safe, prudent, and organized manner.
- Ability to accurately input data into computer systems, including fluency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Awareness of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and knowledge of pertinent Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.
- An expressed interest in aiding the District with multiple current and future projects.
- Satisfactory operating, driving, and attendance records.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all forms of weather.
- Ability to work varying shift schedules, including nights and weekends, as needed in support of the District’s operations.
Supervision: The position reports to the Terminal Superintendent.
Work Environment: The employee occasionally may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level ranges from quiet to moderately loud. Duties include service in varying outdoor conditions applicable to NICTD’s service area. The employee must be able to climb and walk on uneven surfaces in all weather conditions. The employee also must be able to pass the standard physical examination to qualify.
Salary and Benefits: The salary for this opportunity is $90k. Health care, dental care, vacation, holidays, supplemental pension plan, Railroad Retirement Board benefits, and comp time are some of the benefits available. Credit for time served in other railroad employment, including approved military leaves, will be applied in determining vacation day entitlements.
